Imeeji - App

Character name: Nero
Character canon: Devil May Cry

Canon summary: Years ago, the legendary dark knight Sparda turned against his fellow demons - casting them back into Hell and sealing it away from humanity. Though considered a fairytale by most, the people of Fortuna formed a cult - the Order of the Sword - worshipping Sparda as a saviour. It was in this town that Nero was abandoned as a baby. He grew up alongside his childhood friends, Kyrie and Credo, and eventually joined the Order as a Holy Knight.

But the true nature of the Order was unbeknownst to him - they ran experiments in secret, bringing in demons through a Hell Gate, and turning their members into demons-in-the-likeness-of-angels. When Dante dropped into assassinate a priest, Nero was ordered to pursue him, but uncovered the Order’s true intentions instead. In the process, Nero also found his weird demon arm resonating with the legendary katana in their possession, the Yamato - previously owned by Dante’s twin, Vergil, and created by Sparda.

The Order kidnapped Kyrie and killed Credo when he opposed to his sister being used as a hostage. Nero was absorbed into their angelic megaweapon, but it was destroyed anyway - Dante from without, Nero from within. After the whole ordeal, Dante entrusted the Yamato to Nero, as well as license to operate under his business’s name: Devil May Cry.

Five years later: a hooded demon shows up at Nero’s home and violently rips his arm off, stealing the Yamato. That figure was Vergil, on the brink of death. He used the Yamato to split himself in two: the weak human half (“V”), and his demonic power (“Urizen”). The latter would go on to use the Yamato to bring in the demonic tree, Qliphoth, into the human realm, where it would begin harvesting human blood from the populace. V enlisted Dante and his friends to stop this demon, and even brought in the still-weak, one-armed Nero to battle him - but they all failed their initial assault.

One month of preparation and a stock of robot arms later, Nero rendez-vous-ed with them again to stop Urizen - not realizing V’s true intentions. It was to reunite with Urizen, and restore Vergil, now more powerful than before. Then the truthbomb was dropped: Vergil was Nero’s father.

Dante rushed off to finish things with his twin once and for all, leaving Nero shaken. Having gone from no family to knowing that his father and uncle were about to kill each other? In one decisive moment, Nero awakened to his true demonic form and stepped in between them, because sibling rivalries were STUPID and YOU GUYS ARE BEING STUPID.

In the end, to stop the Qliphoth from overtaking the Earth, Dante and Vergil flew into the Underworld to sever the tree at its root and close the rift between worlds with the Yamato - knowing they would be trapped there afterwards. They entrusted Nero with taking care of things “on this side” and carrying on their legacy.

Character in canon: It wouldn’t be a Devil May Cry game if every character wasn’t a Mr. Coolguy McOneliner, slaying demons with swords and guns and long jackets. And Nero plays very much into that when he’s in a fight: cocky, taunting, stylin’ on the bad guys for the sheer thrill of it. Most of the time, he doesn’t seem to take these potentially life or death fights seriously at all. There’s always an opportunity to get a laugh in at the other guy’s expense, and he’ll make sure to be crude about it.

For all his demon slaying, it’s not like he does it because he feels so terribly about the loss of life. Objectively it’s bad, yeah, but these devil hunters don’t have a lot of spare empathy for people outside of their personal sphere. They’re not gonna be traumatized over not being able to save innocent people - the idea that he’d be weak enough to lose a fight would actually bother Nero more. It’s definitely more than a little self-centered, but they’re not exactly normal functioning people? And Nero is at least fairly aware of this.

One might think that’s why he generally prefers to work alone when he’s out on missions - that he’s just too cool to get weighed down by anyone, but in truth, he’s more insecure than he lets on. Nero didn’t have a lot growing up - he was bullied severely for being an orphan, and never quite fit in with the religious zealotry of his community. Never proper enough, never pious enough, frowned on and considered a troublemaker. He lost his taste for the power of prayer when his adoptive parents both suddenly passed away - what good was God if kind people still died? That lack of faith lead to rule-breaking, not working well with other Holy Knights… Then, when Nero’s right arm began transforming into its demonic form, he hid it from everyone out of fear of being completely outcast.

He’s not the brightest when it comes to any kind of thinking - deep investigation is not even an option on his radar. Nero very much just follows his heart, for good or ill, and wears it on his sleeve. It can make him a bit predictable, and probably exploitable. Fighting, though - fighting is easy. You wail on things until they stop getting in your way.

In the end, power is everything - he gets that drive from his dad. Vergil passed down his pride and stubbornness too, which is why Nero takes a loss so personally. When he has a bone to pick, all self-preservation and common sense gets thrown out the window. Nothing sets him off more than being considered “dead weight,” or being ignored and brushed aside. It hits all the buttons on his complex over being discarded, and he will hang onto that grudge like hell. The urge to prove himself will always there, and it’s hard to ever satisfy, considering no amount of power in the world can truly save a person from ever feeling loss, or pain, or regret. It only feeds into his pent up frustrations more and more, until he explodes.

This is why a positive influence in his life, like Kyrie, is something that Nero cherishes so much. Having someone who’s just pure kindness, who loves and forgives, has changed his life. Most of his altruism is done on her behalf, because he wants to protect the city she loves, and the people she feels for. It opened up his ability to feel for other people, and turned his frustration into real efforts to make sure no one else has to go through the same kind of hardship he did. With Kyrie, he’s taken in orphans, helps the struggling and homeless in Fortuna and asks very little in return - just barely getting by on the money demon-hunting brings in. This side of Nero is actually pretty bashful, and has a hard time getting the sappy thing he’s thinking to actually come out in words. He’s more than a little puritan too, thanks to his churchy upbringing. Taking care of kids and being a proper money earner for his cobbled-together family has really taught him a patience and care he didn’t have before.

Nero’s brash, rough around the edges, but at the core of it all, he’s driven by the need to protect what little family he can hold onto. When he’s actually able to acknowledge the emotional connections he has and wants to preserve, he really starts coming into his own as a person. He may still be a hothead punk who loves dunking on demons, but even Nero himself is aware of how much more stronger he is when he’s motivated by his heart, and not just pride.

Character in Imeeji: Without any memories, without a sense of who you are, that kind of state embodies a kind of loneliness and isolation to Nero that is every bit as frustrating as the one he grew up with. Which means to start off with, his attitude is going to revert back to the standoffish loner of his teenage years. He’s not important to anyone, and they’ve got no reason to care about him, so… he’s just going to focus on his own day to day pleasures. To hell with giving a damn about the state of the community or whatever politics are going on.

Even his own unit aren’t going to get much different treatment - as far as he’s concerned, they’re just the random saps he got sorted in with. That doesn’t make them family, or even friends. Just allies of circumstance when a Game rolls around, and his assigned roommates. But on the plus side, he’s not really one to fight anyone about what they wanna do, either. Nero knows he’s not the brainsy type, so if someone’s actually got a plan of attack, he’s willing to go along with his orders without questioning too much.

The fact that he’s been dropped into this city to perform is actually the thing he can get behind most. Nero was already a cocky stylebeast when he’s fighting, and that was before he had cameras to show off to. As long as it puts food on the table (figuratively speaking), he’ll play ball with whatever Live is being cooked up. (But he’s still gonna wish he had BAD END’s aesthetic. Punk 4 life)

It really takes interacting with other people to open up his ability to feel any kind of empathy for all these strangers around him. It’s hard to care about people, but much easier to care about a person. His demeanor really revolves around the kind of people who gravitate to him. For the most part, Nero defaults to rude snark, usually making light of things. Though when it comes to more eccentric types, he ends up playing the straight man instead - because someone has to be serious around here? But the boy is so utterly weak for people who are genuinely soft and kind, he doesn’t know what to do with himself. He actually doesn’t know what to do? Between them, or gaining back his memories of Kyrie, Nero will grow to understand the importance of compassion eventually. And once someone becomes Important To Him, he’ll do absolutely anything for them.

Considering he’s a new arrival in Tokyo-F, the presence of people who’ve already bought all their powers and resources is really going to grind his gears. And while he won’t remember his absurd levels of super strength and durability (at least initially), its loss is still going to be felt in his muscle memory. Helplessness is a feeling that is so vile to him... but he’s also not a broad enough thinker to realize the systemic source of this pain. It’s much easier to point fingers at a person in front of him. If Nero plows headlong into too many fights and eats shit constantly, his inferiority complex and his demonic genes are going to rear their ugly heads and turn him desperate, resentful, power-hungry and callous.
